Phil Treble is a typographer and graphic designer who runs the letterpress studio Muttons & Nuts. After growing up in Hull, Phil has worked for Sotheby’s, Penguin Books and Cambridge University Press as a designer. He returned ‘home’ 3 years ago to establish his letterpress studio and keep the craft alive by sharing it with people in East Yorkshire.
With over 25 years’ experience of design and 8 years in letterpress printing Phil is planning to offer letterpress workshops which will teach you hand typesetting with his wood or metal type, preparation for printing, and printing on his relief printing presses. The workshops will be largely bespoke enabling you to print whatever you want, whether it’s 50 Christmas cards or 10 posters/art prints. No need for any art or design skills – Phil will help you explore your creativity through type, colour and layout.
Phil’s own work draws on his expertise in typographic design. He prints and binds limited edition books and creates art prints. He has recently printed a personal book of his late Grandmother’s poetry and is currently working on an edition of the Child ballad, ‘Tamlane’: an old Scottish ballad concerning the rescue of a childhood lover from the fairy Queen.
He is a committee member of the Oxford Guild of Printers and a member of the Fine Press Book Association.
