About Calf House Studios

The former foldyard at Cold Harbour Farm has been sympathetically restored by East Yorkshire craftsmen to create Calf House Studios; a nest of inspirational artists' studios close to the thriving market town of Beverley.

Our Vision

"Calf House Studios is the brainchild of me, Heather Hayward and my father, John Dunning, whose family has farmed in East Yorkshire since the 1600s.

I have always wanted to find a way to make art fun and accessible to all and saw an opportunity to convert some of the redundant buildings at Cold Harbour Farm into an inspirational, affordable studio and exhibition space for East Yorkshire artists and craftspeople.

In addition, I thought how refreshing it would be for people looking for individual and thoughtful special occasion gifts to visit the artists at their work and choose a present in the idyllic surroundings of a working farm."

Cold Harbour Farm was built in 1884 for the then Lord of the Manor of Bishop Burton, Richard Watt. The architect, who was more familiar with racing stables than farm buildings, created a stunning series of buildings that incorporated design features like Palladian window and stone cills. The farm's cow shed was in need of repair, but the craftsmen have able to retain these important historical features whilst creating warm, well insulated and bright artists' studios.

Cold Harbour Farm is a 300 hectare family run farm on the Yorkshire Wolds. The Dunning family has farmed in the area since 1770 and at Cold Harbour since 1889. Since 1993, Cold Harbour Farm has been a LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) demonstration farm and aims to demonstrate that intensive agriculture is consistent with caring for the environment. The farm's current cropping is wheat, barley, oilseed rape, vining peas for Birds Eye and grass to feed the Belgian Blue cross beef herd and dairy heifers.

The development of Calf House Studios further illustrates the Dunning family's ambition to use farm resources efficiently and profitably without compromising the environment or their neighbourhood.
